A Harmless Little Affair
Only a man can be in love with one woman but have sex with another. Women are too emotional, clingy, and prone to jealousy to pull off detached affairs. Women aren’t wired to be able to separate sex and love.
At least, that is what I thought until I met him. Now I meet him once every two weeks, at the same time and place: our place; where the rest of the world ceases to exist. He has never tried to interfere with the adoration I feel for my husband. If anything, he encourages it by giving me everything my husband cannot. In return, he can do with me whatever he chooses. Our trust in one another has never wavered.
In our eight years of meeting, we have mastered this tango. He has honed the ability to tenderly coax out my deepest desires, igniting the blue coals that simmer under my surface. We have a clean and uncomplicated understanding that our ignorance about life outside of our time together is bliss. Our time together is essential for the happiness of my family. We are participating in a Harmless Little Affair… until I am forced to watch, as everything I have ever worked for goes up in flames.

One week, I’m a sober Vegan addicted to spin class. The next week I went too hard on the wine and charcuterie boards so I have to lay on the couch, suffering through the meat sweats.
I think the key to my joy is that I keep trying.
I keep trying to be a good friend, daughter, wife, stepmother… Sometimes I knock it out of the park. Sometimes I shouldn’t have walked up to the fuckin’ plate. But nothing dampens my desire to show up to the game. And much to my conservative husband’s dismay, nothing will keep me from sharing every brutal detail of my success and failure.
I will unfasten the safety pins that keep vulnerability at bay, and share different life experiences I’ve had… and continue to have! You think you’ve got Daddy issues, hold my beer! Do you get anxiety around travel? I got kicked out of Mexico! Struggle with insecurity? I stepped on a scale when I was forty-three and was shocked to find that I was a hundred pounds over my goal weight.
But here I am, trying to do better, and sharing every rough and amusing component of my adventure.

Wittle Wions
I have always adored cats in all forms. They’re in a close tie with gorillas as my favorite animal. I grew up watching nature shows, and by far my favorite segments were those covering lions. There is something about a cat’s actions that mercilessly tickles my funny...
